You, Me, Something Else

You, Me, Something Else
16th September 2011 - 18th March 2012

You, Me, Something Else is an exhibition about sculpture from Glasgow that presents exciting examples of current practice in the city by focusing on ten artists who are all at different stages of international careers.
Glasgow is renowned for the artists that live and work there, and many of them use the medium of sculpture.
The works on display in this exhibition demonstrate how contemporary artists can question established assumptions about what a sculpture can be, what it is made of and how it should look and be displayed.

Saatchi Gallery

The Saatchi Gallery provides an innovative forum for contemporary art, presenting work by largely unseen young artists or by international artists whose work has been rarely or never exhibited in the UK.

'Trauernde 2008' Markus Selg

Among others of Selgs figures, this sculpture appealed to me; mainly because of the expressionless features in the face. However the body of the piece tells a story in itself.

'Ahnenbild2411 2011' Andre Butzer

Butzer's oil piece aesthetically I lack an appreciation for. It's the technique that I like. I've always found thick paint on canvas appealing, and Butzer's work is so thick it is more a sculpture of paint, crafted onto canvas.

'Kinder Filmen 1 2005' Isa Genzken

Some of the works which stood out in the gallery were pieces which used something other than a canvas as material to put work on. This abstract piece was very interesting as it was made on mirror, being able to see yourself behind the paint had a huge effect on me.

'Barriere 2010' Thomas Kiesewetter

In the Saatchi Gallery there were also many sculptures, this piece was a main sculpture which stood out, I think because of the material. Kieswetter has used sheet metal and steel here, which by no means is an easy medium to use.

London Art Fair 2012

London Art Fair took place the Business Design Centre in Islington.
London Art Fair presents over 100 galleries featuring the great names of 20th century British art and exceptional contemporary work from leading figures and emerging talent.
Below are some of the artworks at the fair that inspired me.

These are some works created by the Artist Joni Brenner. I noticed a lot of the work at the fair were portraits, I have a better appreciation for Brenner's work because of his technique, the thick paint creates a three dimensional aspect that for me is very exciting.

'Icon for the Departed Soul' 2009

'Frank' 2009

I also saw a lot of work which was about layered work. These caught my eye because they seemed to have much more meaning and depth.
An artist who really captured this for me was Erik Sommer, his work 'The Guardian 2011' (below) was what I thought his best piece was.

'Practice 4 2011'

Another portrait piece above by Gavin Tremlett, I thought to be very interesting. This was a combination of both portraiture and layering, the closer you get to the work the more layers you could see, layering is something I intend to look further into.
'Mist through Trees 2011' Michael Porter

Among others, this abstract piece caught mine, as well as other peoples eye. This piece again followed the overwhelming theme of layers. Standing by the side of the picture, you could see the many layers of oil paint stand out the canvas.
'Headspace 2011' Marilene Oliver

This piece was made from Ink and drill holes in laser cut acrylic mounted on light box. An outstanding piece which stood out as a new and impressive medium.

'Hafan Deg' 2010 Elfyn Lewis

This piece consisted of layered acrylic on mdf. The smeared paint effect is something I'd like to experiment with in my work.
